How to Prepare Your Home for Demolition Day

Having a demolition crew come to your home can feel overwhelming if you've never done it before. Here's how to prepare so everything goes smoothly.

1. Clear the Work Area

Remove all personal belongings, furniture, and valuables from the rooms being demolished. This includes items in cabinets, closets, and drawers. The demo crew needs a clear space to work safely and efficiently.

2. Protect Adjacent Areas

If you're only demolishing part of your home, protect the areas that aren't being touched. Move furniture away from shared walls, cover floors in hallways, and remove wall decorations that could fall from vibration.

3. Disconnect Appliances

If the demo includes kitchen or laundry areas, disconnect appliances before the crew arrives. This includes refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, and dryers. If you're not comfortable doing this yourself, let the demo crew know in advance.

4. Secure Pets and Children

Demolition sites are dangerous. Keep pets and children away from the work area for the entire duration of the project. The noise, dust, and debris create real safety hazards.

5. Confirm Parking and Access

Make sure the demo crew has a place to park their trucks and easy access to the work area. If you have a driveway, keep it clear. If street parking is limited, let the crew know in advance so they can plan accordingly.

6. Know Your Scope

Be clear about what's being removed and what's staying. Walk through the space with the crew leader before work begins and point out anything that needs to be preserved — specific fixtures, built-ins, or structural elements.

7. Plan for Dust and Noise

Demolition is loud and dusty. If you're staying in the home during the project, plan to be in a different part of the house. Close HVAC vents in the work area to prevent dust from spreading through the duct system.

8. Have a Communication Plan

Exchange phone numbers with the crew leader so you can reach each other during the project. If any questions come up during demolition, quick communication prevents mistakes.

Following these steps helps the demo crew work faster and keeps your project on schedule. At Blitz Demolition, we walk every homeowner through this process before we start.
